A waffle is a batter-based cake or dough-based bread[citation needed] cooked in a waffle iron patterned to give a distinctive and characteristic shape. There are dozens of European regional variations based on the type and shape of the iron and the recipe used. In the Americas, the traditional types as well as frozen waffles, such as the Eggo, are popular.
